Ellen Moloney, President and Chief Operating Officer of Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Ellen Moloney is President and Chief Operating Officer of Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a full-service, 273-bed, community-based academic medical center with 3,900 employees and an annual operating budget of $800 million. She became Newton-Wellesley’s first woman president in March 2023 after serving as the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer since 2014.
Having worked at the hospital for 25 years, Ms. Moloney is a seasoned healthcare leader who advanced from department director to senior executive during her time with Newton-Wellesley. She joined the organization in 1997, first serving as Director of Clinical Ancillary Services and then as Senior Vice President for Outpatient Services before assuming the role of Chief Operating Officer. She also served as Interim President from December 2015 to September 2016.
Ms. Moloney has played a key role in the design and implementation of countless strategic initiatives and programs during her time at Newton-Wellesley, including the development and significant expansions of cancer, breast imaging, and ambulatory care services, as well as the implementation of the hospital’s electronic medical record system. She oversaw capacity management and critical infrastructure upgrades during her time as COO, among other organizational priorities.
Ms. Moloney is also a key contributor to initiatives across the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, of which Newton-Wellesley is a member. She has helped lead multiple collaborations with Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, helping to both bring high-quality, affordable medical care closer to patients’ homes and increase their access to advanced specialty care at the system’s academic medical centers. Ms. Moloney is also a member of numerous systemwide committees, serving as a pivotal leader for program development throughout Mass General Brigham.
Ms. Moloney began her healthcare career as a medical technologist in the laboratory at Salem Hospital, another member of Mass General Brigham, and rose to supervisory and management positions during her time there. She then joined Newton-Wellesley after also working at a healthcare consulting practice.
A native of Beverly, Mass., Ms. Moloney received her Bachelor of Science degree from Rivier University and her Master of Business Administration degree from Bentley University. She is a member of the Bentley University Executive Club and the Massachusetts Women’s Forum.
Ms. Moloney is both delighted and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the organization she has served for a quarter-century.
