Our Orthopedic Department treats the full range of orthopedic conditions, including arthritis, back and spine injuries, fractures, repetitive stress disorders, and sports injuries and work-related injuries. Surgical and non-surgical care for conditions of the hand, foot and ankle are provided.
We also have a dedicated Joint Center, Kaplan Spine Center and Pain Management Center.
Our Wellesley Orthopedic Walk-in is available to anyone in the community, with no appointment necessary. Patients ages 5 and up are seen.
Spine Center
At the Spine Center we treat a wide variety of spine-related conditions, including:
- Back and leg pain, both acute (sudden-onset) and chronic (long-term)
- Degenerative disorders of the upper and lower spine
- Disc herniations, a bulging or rupturing of a disc between the spine’s vertebrae
- Neck and arm pain, both acute and chronic
- Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column

Joint Center
The Kaplan Joint Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital offers surgical and non-surgical treatments for patients with joint pain. Our joint reconstruction and replacement surgical procedures offer patients a better quality of life and relief from living in discomfort. We treat the following conditions:

Once you’ve arrived on the hospital campus, follow these steps to find the Kaplan Joint Center:
- Enter the hospital using the Surgical Center entrance.
- Follow the signs to Shipley Way.
- Take a left at the end of Shipley Way.
- The hallway to the Green Medical Office Building will be on the right.

Hip Reconstruction (Hip Arthroplasty)

Knee Reconstruction (Knee Arthroplasty)
Knee reconstruction encompasses partial or total knee replacement, revision knee replacement, minimally invasive knee arthroscopy, and knee osteotomy. These procedures are designed to repair or replace damaged knee joints, reduce pain, and improve movement. Learn about knee replacement
Weight Loss Surgery patients
We also work with the Center for Weight Loss Surgery to provide comprehensive care for patients whose joint pain is exacerbated by being overweight or obese. This multidisciplinary approach helps improve overall joint health and mobility.

Hand Surgery
Our Orthopedic Surgery team at Newton-Wellesley Hospital has vast experience in caring for a wide range of conditions that affect the hand and related areas, including:
- Arthritis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Chronic pain
- Dupuytren’s contracture, an abnormal thickening of the skin at the base of the fingers that causes the fingers to curl inward or sideways
- Fractures and sprains
- Ligament injuries

- Wrist pain
During your first appointment with us, your hand surgeon will talk to you about your condition and symptoms and perform a thorough examination. You likely will need imaging tests to help us understand the problem. These tests may include CT scan, MRI scan or X-rays.
Foot and Ankle Surgery
Our Orthopedic Surgery team at Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides outstanding care to patients who need help with conditions that affect the foot and ankle. These conditions include:
- Ankle fractures and sprains
- Arthritis
- Bunions
- Foot and toe fractures
- Foot conditions related to diabetes
- Hammer toe
- Heel fractures
- Plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the ligament that connects the heel to the toes
- Sports-related injuries, such as running injuries, stress fractures, turf toe, etc.
- Tendinitis, an inflammation of the tendons of the foot or ankle, such as Achilles tendinitis

Sports Medicine
The Sports Medicine team is available seven days a week. Our specialists offer state-of-the art outpatient surgical treatment using regional anesthesia for conditions of the shoulder, knee, and ankle. We work with athletes at all levels, including: high school, college, professional athletes and weekend/recreational athletes.
For patients who need physical therapy and rehabilitation after recreational and sports-related injuries, we work closely with the Department of Rehabilitation Services

Concussion management
Our colleagues also offer rehabilitation options for patients who have experienced a concussion. Our specialized concussion management team includes physical, occupational, and speech therapy providers who will work to help you return to your normal function and activities.

Our Orthopedic Walk-In clinic is located in Wellesley and staffed by orthopedic physician assistants and board-certified surgeons from Newton-Wellesley Sports Medicine. Our team can assist with any orthopedic or sports medicine issue.
