Department of Rehabilitation Services

The Department of Rehabilitation Services provides a complete spectrum of rehabilitation care, including occupational, physical and speech-language therapy. We provide comprehensive treatment on an inpatient and outpatient basis. We are a leading provider of rehabilitation services in the Greater Boston area, and our team is committed to bringing you high-quality care that is personalized to your needs.

Occupational Therapy

You may benefit from occupational therapy if you are having trouble managing everyday activities as a result of an injury or illness. Our occupational therapists often work with older patients in our adult/geriatric care program, and we evaluate patients to ensure they are safe to operate motor vehicles in our Drive Safe Program. We also provide outstanding care to newborns with special needs in Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Special Care Nursery, in addition to our many other services.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists care for adults, children, and teens on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, depending on their particular needs and conditions. We provide intensive physical therapy care to patients with orthopedic, spine, and sports medicine conditions. We also collaborate closely with our colleagues at Mass General Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley to provide cancer rehabilitation to patients as part of their cancer care. We also provide a vast array of other physical therapy care, ranging from concussion management to balance and falls therapy, among many other services.

Speech-Language Pathology

Our speech-language pathologists offer specialized therapy programs for children and teens as well as adults. A number of disorders can affect your ability to speak, swallow, and use and understand language. We will work closely with you to create a personalized care plan for you or your child that addresses your unique concerns.

Drive Safe Program

For many older adults, driving is a symbol of freedom and independence, and represents the ability to maintain connections and actively participate in the community. However, driving abilities can change over time due to declining vision, decreased strength, stiff joints, slowed reaction times, medical conditions or medication usage.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

Many people need rehabilitation services, such as occupational therapy or physical therapy, after an illness, injury, or surgery. At Newton-Wellesley Hospital, your rehabilitation care can begin while you are still in the hospital, giving you a head start on the road to recovery.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital has inpatient rehabilitation therapy coverage every day of the year for our hospitalized patients. Our therapists see patients of all ages, from 1 day old to over age 100.

Our expert inpatient rehabilitation therapists provide a full range of services to help you recover to your fullest potential. Some of the many patients we treat include:

  • Older adults who don’t move and function as they once did
  • Patients in the intensive care unit with critical illnesses
  • People with bone and joint injuries, as well as those who have had bone or joint surgery
  • People with dizziness from inner-ear or brain dysfunctions
  • Premature newborns to support their development
