Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Our board certified gastroenterologists provide specialized care for esophageal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), disorders of the small intestine and colon including inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis), colon cancer screening, liver diseases, and disorders of the pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. We work in close collaboration with acute care surgeons, colorectal surgeons, and gastrointestinal oncologists.

Infectious Disease and Travel Medicine

The Division of Infectious Diseases provides inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, including infections caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses. We treat community-acquired pneumonia, infections related to compromised immune systems, parasitic infections, tickborne illnesses, infections related to childbirth and breastfeeding, infections related to travel, and infections that arise from surgery.

Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology provides inpatient and outpatient consultations in kidney disease, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, hypertension, and management of patients with renal failure requiring acute or chronic dialysis. We also work with patients to decrease kidney stone risk factors. Kidney transplantation is coordinated with transplant centers in Boston, with pre- and post-operative care available at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

The hospital is a teaching site for the Harvard Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training program. The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary services on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week basis. The division is composed of practitioners whose expertise covers the gamut of respiratory medicine. In addition to providing primary and consultative inpatient and outpatient care to individuals with the traditional array of respiratory problems, we have expertise in critical care medicine, sleep physiology, environmental and occupational medicine, and allergy and immunology. The division is also affiliated with the Partners Asthma Center.

Members of the division participate vigorously in the medical education programs at Newton-Wellesley, including Medical Grand Rounds, attending on the medical wards and in the Intensive Care Unit, offering an elective to medical residents, teaching physical diagnosis to second-year medical students, participating in multi-specialty clinical conferences, and hosting a monthly pulmonary case conference.

Members of the division are frequent recipients of teaching awards from hospital housestaff for their dedication and expertise in medical education. Although involved primarily in patient care and medical education, members also contribute to the medical literature.

Rheumatology

The Division of Rheumatology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides patient care, medical education, and clinical research. Members of the division perform all outpatient, emergency room, and inpatient evaluations for patients with rheumatic disorders.

State-of-the-art treatment is provided for conditions and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system, which includes joints, soft tissues, connective tissues, muscles, and bones. Our physicians diagnose and treat autoimmune diseases and different types of arthritis.
