At Newton-Wellesley Hospital, our specialty trained robotic urologic surgeons are at the forefront of minimally invasive treatment and comprehensive multidisciplinary care for patients with genitourinary cancers and conditions, including:

Robotic Genitourinary Cancer Surgery

Our urologic cancer surgeons perform several different robotic operations for genitourinary cancers. We utilize a multidisciplinary team with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists to offer the most advanced and appropriate treatment. Localized prostate cancer is treated with a robotic radical prostatectomy, by which the entire prostate gland and surrounding tissue is removed. For kidney cancer, we perform either partial or radical nephrectomy to remove the portion of the kidney containing the tumor or the entire kidney if needed. Our robotic system offers fluorescence imaging, which allows us to better distinguish between kidney cancer and the surrounding benign kidney tissue during partial nephrectomy. Robotic surgery for bladder cancers allows for both partial and total removal of the bladder to be done with less trauma and blood loss. After most of our robotic surgeries, our patients stay in the hospital for only 1 or 2 days, experience less post-operative pain and have a faster recovery time at home.

Robotic Surgery for Benign Genitourinary Conditions

Our urologic surgeons perform minimally invasive robotic surgery for a vast array of benign genitourinary conditions ranging from benign enlargement of the prostate, to complex lower urinary tract reconstruction, to upper urinary tract reconstruction due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Although many of these operations are performed in the traditional “open” fashion in the United States, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital our surgeons perform these operations minimally invasively, leading to shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, and decreased risk of complications such as incisional hernias and bowel adhesions. Robotic surgeries for benign genitourinary conditions include simple prostatectomy for benign enlargement of the prostate, simple cystectomy for neurogenic bladder, bladder diverticulectomy, bladder fistula repair, excision of urachal cysts, ureteral reimplantation for stricture, pyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction, adrenalectomy for hormonally active adrenal lesions, and simple nephrectomy for non-functioning or minimally functioning kidneys.
