The NWH laboratory is a comprehensive diagnostic facility that is operational year round, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. We process over 2.3 million billable laboratory procedures annually. Clinical and Anatomic Laboratory services are provided  to Newton-Wellesley Hospital as well as to referring Mass General Brigham and other area hospitals, nursing homes, physicians’ offices, clinics and VNA home health agencies.

Our Laboratory has extensive testing capabilities in the following areas:

  • Blood Bank
  • Chemistry
  • Cytology
  • Hematology
  • Histology
  • Microbiology
  • Serology

Testing capabilities include a vast majority of routine tests, as well as a variety of esoteric procedures.

Lab Test Results

Approximately 98% of our testing is performed on-site at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. With most of our testing performed on-site we are able to offer:

  • Three hour STAT turnaround times on specimens collected outside of the Hospital from the time of the request to the time the results are called to the clinician.
  • Notification of Critical Values to the ordering clinician or facility within 30 minutes of receiving the results. This is within the Joint Commissions standard of one hour.
  • Direct electronic access of labs thru the Partners electronic medical record system, LMR.
  • The ability to interface with a variety of electronic medical records through an interfacing company called Lifepoint Informatics.
  • Access to a Web portal for results and Lab ordering. Lifepoint Informatics
  • On site printing, faxing and courier delivery of paper reports.

Courier Services

Our uniformed courier service drivers are trained to ensure specimen integrity during transportation and utilize a bar code scanning system to document all pick up and drop off times.

Routine and STAT services are provided at no charge. Specific courier times will be arranged for routine service to best accommodate our clients’ hours of operation.

Personalized clinical and cytology/pathology requisition forms are provided on our forms page.

For specimens that will be dropped off in person, please review our Specimen Drop-Off Guidelines for locations and instructions. For specimens that are coming to Newton-Wellesley’s Laboratory for testing, collection supplies are provided and delivered to clients at no charge.

If you need a test added on after the specimen has already left your facility, please complete the Add On Test Request form, fax to 617-243-6767 and call Customer Service at 617-243-6300 to confirm receipt of the request.

If you require information about a lab test, our representatives may be able to refer your technical questions to an appropriate lab supervisor or pathologist if necessary. Outside of normal business hours, our laboratory technical staff is available 24/7 to assist with any questions.
